The Pantanal of southwest Brazil, due to the variety and number of animals and its unique wilderness, is surely one of the most spectacular areas for nature lovers. This region (the largest wetland in the continent) is a big receptacle of water coming from higher lands around it, and rains are strongly seasonal. Mostly wetlands of one kind or another are found together with patches of woodland.

The Transpantaneira Road goes for 145 km (90 mi) into the heart of the Pantanal, running along an embankment, which provides a great vantage point to view and photograph the fauna. There are around 120 wooden bridges and animals congregate in the remaining pools during the driest months. Hundreds of Spectacled Caymans dose next to Capybara families, and the great Jabiru Storks feast on fish. Tapir, Giant Otter, Marmosets, Giant and Collared Anteater, and even Jaguar are possible too. The raucous Hyacinth Macaws, sometimes seen in large flocks, are simply stunning. Large concentratioins of waders and noisy Toucans provide sights and sounds that you shall not forget.
