Hooded Grebe research In January 2009, a team of Seriema Nature Tours guides will be gathering data on the Hooded Grebe´s most important nesting sites throughout the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina.
Over the last few years we have noted that the numbers of this species have decreased dramatically and, although sightings are still possible, there is strong evidence that the species is undergoing serious conservation problems. To name a few, the introduction of trout in the upper plateau lakes, the expansion of the Kelp Gull (they prey on their nests), added to a lack of conservation policies as applied to sheep farming practices are some of the greatest threats to the species.
Our aim is to collect as much information as possible concerning the quantity of nesting couples in some of the plateaux, in order to compare these numbers with data obtained during the 1980’s and 90’s. We will also gather information on other species of interest, such as the Magellanic Plover, Chocolate-vented Tyrant, Austral Rail, etc.
This information will be published in different magazines, both in Argentina and abroad. |
