On December 24th while visiting the southeast edge of the Salinas Grandes, Juan Klavins discovered a Salinas Monjita nest with two chicks. One of the parents was near the nest with food patiently waiting for him to go along his way. The nest was located in an area with sparse shrubs just on the edge of the great salt flats, beyond which Chilean Flamingos fed in the seasonally inundated area. The well concealed cup-like structure was built on the ground beneath a small "jumesillo" bush, the dominant plant in the Salinas. The Salinas Monjita is restricted to the Salinas of Central Argentina and this observation represents one of the few nesting records for this species. This is the second nest found by a Seriema representative as the first was during a trip to San Jose de las Salinas on October 31, 2002.
